About

Avalanches are at once among the most measured natural hazards on earth and among the most impossible to capture. Models, maps, and danger scales that are indispensable for gauging safety inevitably compress the avalanche's immense power and uncertainty into simplified categories. This project develops "The Multimodal Avalanche" as a new way of representing, and therefore witnessing, avalanche events. The multimodal avalanche also aims to connect scientific data and field experience to a wider public, which comes through in a more accessible form such as the avalanche archive, an open body of work accessible to all. Using architectural methods of drawing, rendering, and modeling, I, Leslie-Fairuz, aim to expand how avalanches are communicated.
